The official language of India is Hindi. Each state also has its own language, and within these states, there are numerous regional dialects. The bride in this particular wedding comes from the state of Andhra Pradesh, where the official state language is Telugu.
However, most Hindu weddings are conducted in Sanskrit. Sanskrit is the root of many modern languages, but it is also a dead language, meaning that it is no longer used as a spoken language for everyday communication. Therefore, most Hindus do not understand the exact words being spoken at their ceremonies and are guided by their understanding of culture and customs rather than language.
In traditional ceremonies, the bride and groom may speak their vows in either Sanskrit, Hindi, or their regional language. At the ceremony I will attend, the bride and groom will not speak at all.
